I've already done a group dance for 'Chicago', which was 'Cell Block Tango', so I need to do a solo or duet. I was originally going to do a lyrical jazz duet with Amy. Although I wasn't too confident or familiar with lyrical jazz as I havn't done as much of this stlye of dance, so when we realised we could do a street dance as our 'Cell Block Tango' counted for our group dance instead of the street group dance, we decided to do a street dance. So we both thought of some moves that we use for our dance, however we found it too difficult to find time to rehearse together so we decided to do solos.
As I had already thought of some street dance moves and feel more comfortable doing street dance as I have done some previously. So I have chosen to do a street dance to a remix of the song 'Climax' by 'Usher', as I love it and I think it's a good hip hop sing to express through dance and feel like it will be a challenge for me. As the remix of the song includes both the original song and the song 'You da one' by 'Rihanna', my initial thought was to mix the dance up a bit by making the Rihanna bits in the beginning more girly street dance, and then make the Usher bits more proper hip hop, to hopefully make the dance more exciting and give it more variety. The point of the dance could be that I feel like as a girl I should be more girly when dancing, however I just want to be like other street dancers who are less feminine with their movements.
To help to influence me with my dance I have used or developed some moves from old dances that I have done and also watched some youtube clips of both this song and other street dance clips. I think that a lot of waving/ripples and popping movements will go well in the song I have chosen because of particular beats. With enough practice I would like to challenge myself by including these movements in my dance.
After coming up with my final dance, I am pleased with the outcome as I feel that it is quite challenging. However it needs a lot of rehearsing to make it a lot more precise and sharp as the dance is quite fast, and won't look good if it's quite messy.
I think I also need to think about spacing, as I don't know if I use enough of the space/stage. I mainly do most of my moves on just the one spot, so maybe I need to travel around a bit more.
I performed my dance to Sam on 15/5. I felt that my performance was quite accurate, as I remembered all of the dance, and had quite a high level of energy. However I feel that it may have looked slightly messy as certain movements may not have been precise and sharp, although Sam didn't comment on this. My main feedback was that I lacked attitude and confidence throughout. So I will have to perform it again this week. Because of the style of dance it is, it needs to be fierce and full of attitude with facial expressions and posture. I wouldn't say my posture lacked this, but it was mainly my face as I think I had quite a low eye level, but I need to make sure I look up confidently all throughout the performance. Therefore I need to rehearse this a few times to try and work on this.
I performed my dance again to Sam on 22/5, which was so much better as I feel that my eyeline was higher and just overall had more confidence with the whole performance. I also feel that my movements were a lot sharper because I had more confidence and attitude as I was performing to a slightly bigger audience. Although there was one tiny bit at the beginning which I left some movements out so when I realised I was too ahead with the music I juat added some simple side steps or ripples then carried on with the rest. I don't think this was noticeable as I kept a straight face and it looked like it was just a small break in the dance. If I was to perform this again I would need to make sure I keep rehearsing it so that i don't forget the movements I had originally choreographed.
